The Final Turns
(From April 3, 2009)
After a glorious day of spring skiing on a spectacular sunny day, I came in the next day on a day of downpours and wind swept rain to empty my locker and load my car. There were a few things in there I had forgotten about, the extra pair of long johns, the emergency goggles, that neck warmer I'd thought was lost and that package of handwarmers I could have used back in January. I'm looking forward to filling this locker up again next season and hanging out and skiing with all the very cool new friends I made this year.
Fortunately for me my season isn't quite over as I'll make a quick cameo the first week of April to help with the spring British invasion as a whole herd of kids from England and Ireland make their annual spring migration to New England ski slopes. Many of these kids are going to see a ski slope for the first time, some may never have seen snow. There will inevitably be those prepared for sub zero arctic conditions with every inch of flesh covered on forty plus degree day and others who will be more concerned about whether or not the rental boots clash with the color of their new ski jacket. But over all the best thing about hanging out with these kids is that they all expect to have fun and generally bring that excitement with them, it can be infectious even for us grizzled old veterans who have skied a hundred days a year for the past two decades, a subtle reminder of why we do this.
And after that last class has been taught, I'll probably sneak in one more run and if the weather and my schedule cooperate I hope to get just one more day in before I pack everything away for the year. On that day I'll be looking for some old friends I haven't skied with for such a long time. I'll also be looking for that ungroomed corn snow off to the side of the trail that requires a jump or two over a bare spot to access. And if my knees do not protest too much I may have to jump into a bump run or two taking advantage of the forgiving spring conditions. The day may well have to be capped off with a cold beer on the deck and a toast to the ski season of 2008-09 which all in all has been fantastic.
Before I make my final turns of the season I want to thank the staff of the Northcountry News for yet again letting me ramble on in print about my winter obsession. I also want to thank all of you readers who make this column so much fun to write. So after I make those final turns and I'm putting dryer sheets in my boots to keep the critters from storing seeds and acorns in them, my thoughts of spring and summer will be interlaced with the anticipation of next season. Have a great summer folks!
(Publisher’s Note: A big thank you to Sky for writing his popular ski column once again this year in the Northcountry News. It is inevitable that all good things must come to an end - or sort of anyway. An end for the time being, in hopes Sky will be back with us once again for the next fabulous ski season which is just down the road a bit!)
