How The Bronze Was Completed
A Pictoral Guide
The first step involves making a flexible mold clay sculpture.
Left: Flexible mold with the wax casting inside.
Right: Waxes ready for the ceramic mold process.
Left: First coating of ceramic over wax mold.
Right: Second coating of ceramic material.
Left: After each coat of ceramic mix, the wax is dipped in a vat of silicate dust that reacts with the molton bronze to make better cast.
Right: It takes about 9 dips before the mold is complete. These are completed pieces drying.
Left: After the ceramic is dry, the molds are fired in a kiln that melts out the wax. The end product is a hollow ceramic mold. These are filled with water, and holes or cracks are patched with clay.
Right: The molds are heated in the kiln and then placed upright in a tub of gravel to be poured.
Left: The bronze is heated in a forge, in a special cruicibal.
Right: The ceramic molds are filled with molton bronze and left to cool.
Left: The pieces of the sculpture are meticulously welded together and reassembled. They are originally cut into pieces in order to make the mold.
Right: The weld seams are carefully "chased" and textured to ensure that all the seams are invisible.
The next step involves patinas that are used to add color and enhance the bronze metal.
The patinas are applied hot and buffed back to reveal the metal underneath.
The various colors are applied and the torch is used to "set" them.
The final product finally emerges!
As you can see, the details are outstanding. The final step involves mounting the finished bronze to a granite slab for a beautiful presentation....
